Background
Dyslexia and Structured Literacy (2021-Present)
My training in structured literacy began in 2021 when I enrolled in the University of Florida’s graduate certificate in dyslexia. I completed the program in December of 2022 after completing a practicum in which I successfully delivered 40 hours of intervention using the University of Florida model for intensive intervention.
As of July 2023, I devoted myself to this work full-time as I began to take on new students. At the same time, I enrolled in a 100-hour practicum in structured literacy teletherapy through Lexercise. I completed this program in February of 2024, at which time I also passed the KPEERI exam. Through the completion of this second practicum and through the passing of the KPEERI exam, I earned the Certified Structured Literacy / Dyslexia Specialist credential (C-SLDS) from The International Dyslexia Association.
I am very grateful to both the University of Florida and Lexercise for providing me with the foundations for delivering high-quality one-to-one interventions for students with dyslexia or who are otherwise experiencing difficulty in learning to read and spell. While the university provided me with both the theoretical foundations and the practical tools for designing and implementing effective interventions, the training through Lexercise provided me with the technical skills to deliver instruction online that meets or exceeds the level of instruction a student might receive in an in-person setting. Additionally, my Lexercise training deepened my knowledge and understanding of structured literacy, helping me further personalize the interventions I deliver to my students.
Since 2023, I have focused on growing my practice and my expertise as I have worked with ever greater numbers of students and taken additional training. To meet the needs of older/more advanced students, I completed training in the Morphology Plus program through the Institute for Multisensory Instruction. To meet the needs of students who require both math and reading support, I enrolled in Dyscalculia for Dyslexia Tutors Training offered by the Dyscalculia Training Center, which has been an invaluable resource for supporting my students’ diverse learning needs.
In 2026, my professional development continues as I train in the Read Naturally Live and The Writing Revolution 2.0 programs. I am delighted to be working in a field with so much opportunity for continued learning, and I love diving deeper and deeper each year into the art and science of explicit instruction, structured literacy, and dyslexia intervention. I have also been happy to serve as an instructional coach at The University of Florida since 2025, serving current Graduate Certificate in Dyslexia students as a practicum coach. This experience has allowed me to deepen my understanding of intervention and also to stay up to date on current practices.
Prior Experience (2007-2023)
Before I started working as a dyslexia interventionist, I enjoyed a 15-year career as an educator, administrator, and specialist in both private and public schools, in the US and internationally. I am a certified teacher in the State of Connecticut with a license to teach grades K-6 general elementary education and Social Studies in grades 7-12.
As a classroom teacher, I taught math, reading, and social studies at the elementary level for 3 years and middle school English and social studies for 8 years. As an administrator, I served as the coordinator of a school's gifted and talented program for 2 years. I also worked as a learning specialist for 2 years, providing special education support.
I have completed two master's degrees in Education. My first master's degree was a Master of Arts in Teaching, which qualified me for initial teaching certification in the State of Connecticut. My second master's degree was a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent Development. This degree provided me with the necessary expertise to create individualized support for gifted and talented students, to design school-wide gifted and talented programs, and to craft district policies governing grade-level and subject-specific acceleration - all of which I accomplished in my role as gifted and talented coordinator.
In working with gifted and talented students, I came to understand neurodiversity and twice-exceptionality, which is the co-occurrence of giftedness and learning disability in the same child. My interest in this topic is what ultimately led me to pursue studies in dyslexia at the University of Florida. I never expected to discover such incredibly effective methods and such deep research into reading and writing. I am astonished by the amount of existing research about how literacy develops in the brain and what we can do to help literacy skills become established. I feel so fortunate now to continue pursuing my career as an educator with a clinical perspective, helping individuals overcome their reading difficulties so they can truly discover their potential in life.
Academic Background Prior to Teaching
Prior to beginning my career in education, I studied International Relations as an undergraduate at Tufts University. I have always valued international perspectives, histories, and cultures. I fundamentally believe that we are all one human family on this earth and that our diverse cultures create a tapestry that enriches our experience of life. I deeply value patience, active listening, compromise, open-mindedness, mindfulness, and non-violence as ways of creating understanding and networks of support that sustain human life.

Teaching for High Potential Nov 2021
My Colleague Brad Brandvold and I collaborated to write an article featuring Mr. Brandvold’s Near Space Program. As a high school physics teacher, Mr. Brandvold is exceptionally talented at using project based learning and differentiation of instruction to create academic experiences for all students, including gifted and talented students who are ready to go beyond the content of their regular classes. As a Gifted and Talented Coordinator, it was always a pleasure to work with Mr. Brandvold and to advocate together on the behalf of gifted and talented students.
Los Frutos Rojos - Mujeres Lideres
By Elena Olascoaga, translated by Robert Belden
My wife, Elena Olascoaga is the author of a book, Los Frutos Rojos, Mujeres Lideres. There is also a documentary to accompany the text. This book is about her own journey into woman’s leadership and how she worked with a group of woman leaders towards the goal of promoting sisterhood and compassionate activism while challenging inherited false beliefs around women’s limitations. It was my honor to translate the English edition of Elena’s book, which is soon to be released.
